Lupus

Symptoms

Lupus is an autoimmune disease of the rheumatic family. Because it gives the face a wolf-like resemblance, it is called lupus, meaning wolf. Lupus appears in either of two forms. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) affects the connective tissue in all parts of the body and is regarded as quite a serious illness. However, discoid lupus is limited only to the skin. The systemic type causes arthritic symptoms throughout the body, along with fever, weakness and weight loss. On the cheeks and over the nose bridge, a characteristic red rash develops in the shape of a butterfly. Sunlight triggers or aggravates the eruption. When inner organs become affected, including the kidneys, lungs and heart, the prognosis is serious. As is typical for autoimmune illnesses, lupus recurs in attacks which then subside for varying intervals. When the flare-ups recede, scars are often left on the skin.

Causes

Lupus is not a common disease, and little is known about its cause. As in all autoimmune diseases, the body’s defense system attacks, inflames and destroys its own tissues. It affects more women than men, and is often triggered following therapies with certain medications, including oral contraceptives, high blood pressure medications and sulfa drugs. Immunizations and viral infections, as well as fatigue and stress on the body, can trigger an attack of lupus.

Nutrition

A low-calorie, low-fat diet will benefit lupus treatment. Emphasize fresh vegetables and vegetable proteins from potatoes, whole grains, soy beans and legumes. Avoid red meat and dairy products. The amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine in animal protein foods contribute to the progression of lupus symptoms. Fat in the diet should come from unrefined, cold-pressed vegetable oils and fish. They contain essential fatty acids or, in the case of fish, eicosapentanoic acids which have a beneficial effect on the health of lupus patients.

Mild cases of lupus respond well to a stimulation of the immune system. To strengthen the immune system, drink plenty of water, limit sugar, and eat raw, enzyme-rich, green vegetables and citrus fruits for vitamin C. Make sure your diet includes foods rich in zinc. Raw pumpkin seeds and oysters from clear, uncontaminated waters are two good sources.

Avoid alfalfa sprouts. They contain canavanine, a toxin which the body incorporates into protein in the place of the amino acid arginine, producing a lupus-like syndrome or aggravating systemic lupus erythematosus.

Nutritional Supplements

Diet is very important in the treatment of lupus, as well as in other related rheumatoid illnesses and should not be neglected. Supplements can add to the benefits of a good diet and have often been used to hold off the symptoms indefinitely, even though symptoms return once the supplements are discontinued.

Some cases of both systemic and discoid lupus improve markedly with high dosages of vitamin E. Selenium, in some cases, increases the effectiveness of vitamin E. The B vitamin pantothenic acid is effective and should be taken with the other B vitamins. Vitamin B12 injections have proved helpful in other instances. Studies with beta-carotene showed it to be beneficial in preventing skin outbreaks from the sun, typical for discoid lupus.

Daily dosages:

Most Important

Vitamin E, with mixed tocopherols, 400 IU in divided doses, gradually increasing to 1,200 mg

Vitamin B complex, 50 mg three times daily

900 mg pantothenic acid, three times daily

Helpful

Selenium, 200 mcg

Beta-carotene, 50,000 IU three times daily

Herbal Remedies

A general herbal cleansing program is helpful in the treatment of lupus.

Devil’s claw, echinacea, goldenseal, red clover, yucca, watercress juice, aloe vera, garlic, ginger and burdock root have been helpful.

Lupus can be completely destroyed with black walnut.

Homeopathy

The homeopathic approach to lupus is constitutional treatment along with diet and lifestyle changes. Consult an experienced homeopath for extensive treatment.

Tissue Salts

For tissue salt remedies to relieve specific symptoms, see these sections: blood pressure (high), fatigue, fever, immune system and stress.

Other Suggestions

Chelation therapy helps alleviate lupus symptoms by strengthening the body’s immune system.

I'm 38,coping with many forms of lupus since my teenage; for rash, icy wather help, strong sunscreen poor in oil is essential. Hair falls, hat, selenium & nioxin therapy; mental fatigue;fish oil full of omega3. But I want you to be aware that lupus is so complicated and so difficult to control that the folish market gets advantage of it offering us miracle potions without care on the real effect on our healt. Be carefull on that, consult dermatherapist, stay happy & evoid the sun... And never give up the fight!

you are all miss informed have you even read anything about the disease do you not see that is a very psinfull snd dibilatating disorder that changes your whole way of life fom having a facial rash to heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, sevear internal bleading and so on... yes arthritis comes hand in hand with lupus and your hair does fall out because of the medication that is given to supress the immune sustem but the medication is far important than just some hair loss !!!!!

Hello there im a 31yr old. I've been having swelling in my right leg for the past 3 yrs now and the dr.'s ran all type of blood test but nothing comes up. I'm wondering if i may have lupus. My leg swells and it gets infected on occasions where i have to be hospitalized and medicated. I thought it was a bad case of footfungus but the problem is not getting any better. What do u suggest i do.

hi, i've been diagnosed with discoid lupus about 6 mos ago. it started last summer when i was at work digging a trench. of course it was 95 degrees that day and i thought it was just a sunburn where the arms of my sunglasses ride the side of my head. i had a sore on each one of my temples which i thought was weird. it would scab up and never heal. i could pull the scabs off after a shower, hurt like hell, but wouldn't bleed. like marc said, i have to stay out of the sun, wear a brimmed hat, and use spf 10000000 sunscreen. if i get any sun without sunscreen it scabs up after one day. THIS STUFF IS RUTHLESS!! but i only have to use protopic twice a day for now, and i seem to have it under control so i dont have to take the pill as of now. but i'm a 31 year old electrician and my knees are about gone so i take glucosamine and chondroitin which helps alot and my hips hurt periodically. i haven't seen a rheumatologist (and don't want to), cause i dont want to know. does anyone out there ha...

I had the problem with the soles of my feet and toenail beds for 7 years and nothing helped. Tried everything doctors, specialists and naturalists told me but nothing worked. Then read an article about an asian natural remedy-sarsparilla. Tried it in cordial form and saw immediate improvement but still didn't remove the problem. Then began eating a banana at lunch each day as well as taking the sarsparilla cordial and the combination worked after about 3 months. It took about 6 months to totally eradicate the problem but it has been about 5 years now and no signs of further outbreaks so I guess it worked. Not sure why but it had to be the combination of both the sarsparilla AND fresh banana together. Both are natural so give it a try it might work for you too.

Mary, I have been discourged for a long time. Last week my pain doctor ran blood test for lupus. Of course I hope I don't have this. Tonight in reading these words from other people I remember when my son had a rare form of caner, Ependamoma, the doctors kept telling us he would die from this. In praying for my son, God reminded me that He is the great Phyisian. My son has been cancer for alomst 19 years. We who are sick and don't know where to turn need to find a doctor who will get to the bottom of what is going on. A good Dr. will send you to another Dr. if they can't help you. We also need to rely on the The Great Phyiscan. Rhonda M KY.

You seem very distraught. The fact that you have tested negative for lupus should be counted a blessing. It could be something much less damaging. Neither you nor I know what is really wrong with you, and I hope it is nothing too serious. Not knowing gives me no way to advise you what to do. However, what you should know is that if you are not satisfied with what your doctor(s) is saying, you need to put your foot down hard. Either make your doctor(s) give you answers (be firm, this is your health and your money we are talking about) or find another doctor who actually cares. Good luck.

There seems a bit too much misinformation here about lupus. I can tell you about discoid lupus erythematosus. I have had it for about thirty years. It is hard to stay out of the sun, but you absolutely must do this, and powerful sunscreen is definitely recommended. It first presented as a sore on my scalp that would not heal, which progressed to a scarring, flaking, reddish patch and permanently removed some of my hair. That is now dormant, but I have developed the butterfly rash on my face, which I try to control with moisturizing ointments, and a bad rash on the soles of my feet, which is quite painful at times. There are also lesions in my mouth, on my palms, and anywhere I get an open sore. By far, the worst symptom is the rash on my feet, which causes me great difficulty in standing and walking. Oh, and the nail beds of my hands and feet are affected as well. There are flare-ups, usually caused by too much sun exposure I presume, and I'm advised that my smoking also aggra...
